Every year, the Gloria Rints International Silver Stick is the most exciting tournament of the Minor Midget AAA scouting season, and the 2018 edition was certainly no different. There is a different feel in most every Silver Stick game as the intensity and calibre of play reaches a higher level than at any other time up to this point in the season. With almost three months under their belts, players are in mid-season form with all of the rust knocked off of their game. The tournament field is loaded with highly talented teams from across the province and U.S., and there is a heightened familiarity with their own team as well as their opponents.
Going in, the top storyline was the potential of a match-up between the Don Mills Flyers and Detroit Compuware and as fortune would have it, those wishes were granted with the two teams meeting in the final. The game between by far the two most talented teams in the OHL eligible region was one for the ages. A back and forth affair culminated with Don Mills saving their incredible undefeated season by tying the game in the dying seconds, only to finally suffer their first taste of defeat when Noah Laba scored in overtime to give Compuware the win and the Silver Stick championship. The game and the entire run to the finals for both teams is something that spectators will soon not forget.
TheScout.ca was in Whitby from start to finish with Director of Scouting Andrew Sykes being joined by area scouts Ryan Stacey, Jason Gray and Ryan Ferizovic covering the tournament and combining their thoughts for the following report.
