2018 Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament Report

Wendy D

Always a great gathering of talent, the Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament in London is one of the major stops in the minor midget AAA season and the 2018 event was no different

Coming out of the Toronto Titans tournament, all eyes were on the Don Mills Flyers, and while it may have been a difficult expectation for them to continue the phenomenal level of play we saw in Toronto, they managed to perform even better on route to once again blitzing everyone in their path. In what should be the first of many big games between the two, the Flyers took care of the Toronto Marlboros in the Final by a 6-1 score.

It was impossible for anyone in London not to be gravitated towards Don Mills every time they played because of how fun they are to watch. Led by the remarkable Shane Wright who is edging closer to being granted exceptional status, the tournament’s leading scorer Brennan Othmann, and two of the top defensemen in the age group in Roman Schmidt and Brandt Clarke, the Flyers have what seems to be a never-ending supply of elite players who are all capable of playing an incredibly high octane and creative style of hockey.

While Don Mills claiming the championship was expected, there were some pleasant surprises in the tournament. The likes of Halton and Ajax-Pickering made runs to the quarterfinals and were both within minutes of advancing to the semis. While no longer a surprise, the Sudbury Wolves advancing to their second straight semifinal was done in impressive fashion with the way they are able to win close games late.

Director of Scouting Andrew Sykes was joined by area scouts Ryan Ferizvoic and Matt Stewart to take in the action over the weekend and contributed to the following report which includes comments on 146 players, honourable mentions, and our selections for the Top 20 performers of the tournament. Media Producer Zach Scribner was also in attendance taking pictures and conducting interviews with top prospects.
