Dubas: No decision yet on assistant coach

Kyle Dubas said the Soo Greyhounds have completed their interview process, but won't hire an assistant coach to mentor their defencemen for at least a couple of weeks.

On Thursday, a source told The Star the club was about to hire former NHL defenceman Joe Cirella, who had been an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals.

But on Friday, Dubas, heading into his second season as the Hounds general manager, said the club "has no one under contract. We haven't made a decision or come to an agreement with anybody."

Asked if Cirella interviewed for the job, Dubas said: "As per team policy, I'm not going to discuss any applicants or specific people who interviewed."

Dubas went on to say the Hounds won't announce a replacement for assistant coach Nick Warriner, who's contract wasn't renewed, until the early part of July.

Head coach Mike Stapleton will join Dubas at next weekend's NHL Entry Draft in Pittsburgh.
