Landing Lessio changes Generals' outlook in a big way

Oshawa has the makings of an OHL contender over next two years

Things just got a whole lot more promising for the Oshawa Generals.

While Chris DePiero, the team's head coach and general manager, rightly points out that Lucas Lessio is only one player among 20 who will suit up each game this season, Lessio's decision to forego a scholarship and finally sign with the Ontario Hockey League club changes the outlook over the next couple of years in a big way.

Suddenly a team that was bereft of talent up front and struggled mightily to score goals last season has the makings of at least two strong lines this season and, perhaps, of a contender the year after that.

Lessio will have to live up to the hype, of course, but there's little reason to believe he won't.

Chosen seventh overall by the Niagara IceDogs in 2009 despite his stated intention of going the NCAA route, Lessio put up 30-42-72 numbers in just 41 games with the St. Michael's Buzzers last season.

DePiero took a big gamble in dealing for his rights -- he could lose as many five high draft picks -- but he waited patiently as Lessio finally came to the conclusion the OHL was more likely to raise his NHL stock.
